Taught her how to play
On a guitar that I gave her D E and A
Taught her ‘bout minor and major
Soon she started playing steady
Hit the notes where they’d belong
Then one day she’s ready
She wants to sing her first song
She hops up on the stage
Throws the strap around her neck
She doesn’t have no lyrics page
Speaks into the mic, “check, check”
Then she starts strumming away
Puts some rhythm to the strings
I have heard her play those chords before
But I’ve never heard her sing
My woman she sings so sweet
It’s real plain to see
But how can I sing along
When she’s singing ‘bout a man who ain’t me?
I can’t believe my ears
Am I hearing her correct?
‘Cause the way it sounds from here
Seems like I’m her latest reject
Does she think I’m crazy?
Who’s she think I am?
My mind’s going to paisley
Listening to her sing about that other man
If she had to tell me
Why couldn’t she have told me straight?
‘Cause now I’m stuck here on the dance floor
While everyone else swings and sways
Should I hear the song out
Or should I just go home?
Maybe I’ll jump up on stage
And sing a song of my own
Yeah, my woman she sings so sweet
It’s real plain to see
But how can I possibly sing along
When she’s singing ‘bout a man who ain’t me?

I just ran and my knees do ache
But the pain goes away when you speak
I need you right now long I've never needed anyone before
Four times I call you won't pick up
Dear God I hope I haven't screwed up
But the double doors burst open and like an angel you stand
Stand so tall
My legs give out
So I'll crawl
But please hold me close and hold on tight because my arms are weak
And I just wanna go and run away with you
Tired legs left behind
And I just wanna find a place to stay with you but these road blocks keep on tangling my mind
So please don't go 'cause I am way too slow
I can't think
Just breath and blink
But as stupid as i am
Just take me for what am
A man
Oh man have i been all wrong
You've shown me that my legs are all strong
And with hell behind us we ran as fast as we could and found ourselves finally alone Still
I feel
I speak
In a hushed tone
That i just wanna go run away with you Tired legs left behind
And I just wanna find a place to stay with you but these road blocks keep on tangling my mind

Long before I was your old man
I used to have my own band
We used to jam — It was grand
I met your mother and long before I loved her
We would get each other’s parents so mad (Drove ‘em to drink!)
You know we used to be kids once too
Do that
I told you not to do that
I told you not to do that
I told you not to do that
What did I tell you?
Thought I made myself clear
I only do what’s best for you
So kid you listen up here
You better straighten up
‘Cause I told you so
Don’t you see that when you get to be
As old as your mom and me
You’ll ponder me fatherly
You grow up best when you’re made to learn a lesson
So please lessen your aggression toward me
(We’ve been in your shoes before!)
You know we used to be kids once too
Do that
I told you not to do that
I told you not to do that
I told you not to do that
